Lyrical and contemporary dance are slightly different from each other. But they both share two defining elements: the beauty and grace of classical ballet, and the high energy of jazz technique.
On a deeper level contemporary dance is about challenging the status quo. By challenging pre-conceived ideas that relate to structure, form, rhythm and dynamics – new and inventive forms of expression are realised.
Lyrical and contemporary dance classes in Perth incorporate underlying themes into the choreography. This involves the dancers working together to pull off stunning choreography and injecting a strong sense of emotion and passion into their craft.
Please refer to the timetable for information on lyrical and contemporary dance class times in Perth.
Each class begins with a warm-up routine that involves stretches and general exercises.
From there you will learn a range of modern dance techniques including soft and hard-hitting movements. Students will also learn how to perform routines with different timings, floor work, change of direction and balance.
As lyrical and contemporary dance is very popular, the movement is always changing and adapting to the times. Our instructors are well-informed on the latest stylistic changes and trends and will present new ideas, concepts and techniques for students to master.
For students who want to prepare for competitions, performances and auditions, JMDC can help students learn the specific routines, techniques and skills they need to achieve success in their chosen field.
Contemporary dance requires a lot of movement. You are encouraged to wear a comfortable top and flexible leggings which allow you to move freely. Each class features a combination of theory and extensive dance practice – so bring water to stay hydrated.
Whether you have a background in an existing dance style. Or you wish to explore the creative potential of contemporary dance. Taking class with JMDC gives you the foundation you need to develop your own unique form of expression.
Since contemporary dance does feature aspects of jazz and classical ballet, experience in these fields is a bonus – but not mandatory to learn contemporary dance.
The recommended age for lyrical and contemporary dancers is 9 years and above.

Amazing dance studio. My 3 children dance at Jody's... my son and two daughters. My daughters especially love to dance. This school teaches superior technique while having fun. Jody's attention to detail when teaching technique is really something. Why go anywhere else. Hands down best studio in the area.
I can highly recommend JMDC, my daughter has danced here for 5 years. The teaching is to a professional quality with a fantastic focus on technique, all while being fun and making great friendships.
